Why Emotional Stress Shows Up as Physical Symptoms
Fatigue that sleep does not fix. Weight that will not move. Digestion you have been managing for years. Pain with no clear cause.
You have probably had the labs run. You may have been told everything looks normal. Or you have done the diet, the supplements, the protocol, and gotten partway there and stalled.
There is a piece most people have never had explained to them, and it is not that your symptoms are in your head. Emotional stress your body has not finished processing can drive and sustain real physical symptoms, and until it is addressed, the physical work often does not hold.
I am Kyla Phillips, a Registered Nurse of more than twenty years. I use biofeedback testing to find what is actually driving symptoms. Close to half the time, what comes up first is emotional.
This is not a fringe idea
The connection between emotional stress and physical illness is well documented in conventional medicine.
Psychoneuroimmunology, the study of how psychological states affect the immune and nervous systems, has shown for decades that chronic stress changes immune function, inflammation, and hormone regulation.
The Adverse Childhood Experiences study, run by the CDC and Kaiser Permanente, found a graded relationship between childhood adversity and adult physical disease. More adversity, more disease.
Chronic activation of the stress response affects cortisol, blood sugar, digestion, and sleep. Your doctor would agree with all of this.
What conventional medicine does not usually do is treat the emotional piece as something to address directly, or test to find out whether it is the priority in your particular case. That is the part I work with.
Your body sets the order, not me
When I test you, I am not deciding where to start. I am asking your body what it wants addressed first and following the answer.
Sometimes the scan shows physical findings at the top and emotions still test as the priority. That happens often enough that I have stopped being surprised by it.
A client came in with tightness across her chest that ran into her back, along with a cough she had been carrying for months. She had already been worked up medically and nothing had come of it. What tested was grief. In Chinese medicine the lungs are the organ associated with grief, and she had lost someone the year before.
Here is the part that is hard to believe until you watch it happen. When emotional stress is sitting at the top of the list, I often cannot get clear answers on anything else. I test for a hormone, a mineral, a detox product, and the response is muddy. Address the emotional piece, retest, and the physical answers come back clean.
It is not that the physical findings were wrong. The body would not give me a straight answer while something more urgent was in the way.
So starting with emotions is not a detour from the physical work. It is often what makes the physical work possible.
Where the body holds it
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, specific organs are associated with specific emotional states. This is the tradition a lot of this work draws from, and it is thousands of years old.
I do not go looking for these. I test the organ, and the emotional component either shows up or it does not. What surprises people is how consistent the pairings are from one person to the next.
| Element | Organs | Emotion | How it tends to show up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wood | Liver, Gallbladder | Anger, resentment, regret | Frustration with nowhere to go, indecision, feeling blocked |
| Fire | Heart, Small Intestine | Shock, grief of the heart | Palpitations, sleep that will not come, feeling unsettled |
| Earth | Spleen, Stomach, Pancreas | Worry, overthinking | Digestion that shuts down, rumination, appetite changes |
| Metal | Lungs, Large Intestine | Grief, difficulty letting go | Chest tightness, cough, feeling stuck |
| Water | Kidneys, Bladder | Fear, self criticism | Exhaustion, fluid retention, startling easily |
A client came in with nausea and gallbladder congestion. She was caring for an aging parent and carrying most of it alone, with resentment she had never said out loud to anyone. The gallbladder sits in the Wood element, with resentment and regret.
The elements also act on each other. Excess energy in the liver stressing the heart is a standard relationship in this tradition, and it shows up in my testing regularly as frustration that turns into the sensation of palpitations.
When the body will not let go
This is the one I get asked about most, and it is worth its own section.
Weight and fluid behave the same way. The body does not release what it does not feel safe releasing.
A client was holding fluid that would not move no matter what we did physically. What tested was safety. Her body was holding it the way you hold a security blanket.
The same logic shows up with weight. I have had clients doing everything right, working hard, eating well, and watching nothing happen.
One client's body needed to be accepted before it would allow the change. She had a history of being forced to change, and her body was still braced against it.
Emotional eating follows the same pattern. One client put it plainly. If it is there, I will eat it, and I think it is to fill a void. Another had stopped drinking and watched sugar step straight into the same role. The behavior was never really the problem. It was doing a job.
Self sabotage is the one women are hardest on themselves about. It usually is not weakness or a lack of discipline. It is a nervous system that has decided the current situation is safer than the change.
You can work on the food and the movement and the supplements, and those matter. But if the body has a reason to hold on, it will hold on.
What this is not
It is not therapy
I am not going to have you relive anything or talk through your childhood in detail. Most of the time we identify a single feeling, do the balance, and move on. It usually takes minutes.
I do not go digging
If something is not surfacing on its own, I leave it. Your body brings things up when they are ready.
A client asked me to work on her father. She had decided that was the thing. Her body said no. Not now, not that. We worked on something smaller that came up instead, and the father piece surfaced on its own months later, when she was ready for it.
You are always in charge
If your body says no, or you are not ready, we do not do it. Enough gets done to people against their will. This is not going to be one of those things.
Nothing is wrong with you
An emotional finding does not mean your symptoms are imaginary or that you caused them. Your inflammation is real. The stress pattern feeding it is also real. Both are true at the same time.
What a session looks like
Emotional work is part of a regular biofeedback session, not a separate appointment. Your testing runs as it normally would. If emotions come up as the priority, we address them there and then keep going.
The method I use most often is PSYCH-K, a process for working with subconscious beliefs. We identify one specific statement, test whether your body holds stress around it, and do a short balance if it does.
Some people feel a release in the room. Some feel nothing and notice a week later that something they always reacted to no longer bothers them. Some feel tired for a day or two afterward, which is normal. This asks something of the body the way a detox does.
Sometimes the physical piece moves first. The jaw tension eases. The bloating settles. That is usually the clearest sign the emotional piece was what was driving it.
This all works remotely. Most of my clients are not in Massachusetts.
Common questions
Can emotional stress actually cause physical symptoms?
Yes. Chronic emotional stress affects immune function, inflammation, hormone regulation, digestion, and sleep. This is established in conventional medicine. What is less common is treating the emotional piece as something to address directly.
Does this mean my symptoms are in my head?
No. Your symptoms are real and physical. The question is what is driving them and what is keeping them going. An emotional driver does not make a physical symptom imaginary.
Can stress keep me from losing weight?
It can. Chronic stress affects cortisol, blood sugar, and appetite regulation directly. In my testing, what also comes up is safety. If the body has a reason to hold on to weight or fluid, it tends to hold on regardless of what you are doing with food and movement.
Why do I self sabotage when things start going well?
Usually because the nervous system has decided the familiar situation is safer than the change, even when the change is what you want. That is a pattern that can be tested and worked with rather than pushed through by willpower.
Why would emotional work come before supplements?
Because when emotional stress tests as the top priority, testing for physical items often comes back unclear. Addressing it first tends to make the rest of the testing more accurate. It is a sequencing decision, not a preference.
Do I have to talk about my trauma?
No. This is not talk therapy. We usually identify one specific feeling or belief and work with that. You do not have to narrate anything you do not want to.
What if I am not ready to look at something?
Then we do not. If your body tests as not ready, or you say no, we move on. Forcing it does not work.
Will emotions come up every time?
Not necessarily. If they come up again it does not mean the first round failed. Patterns can have layers, and clearing one often reveals the next.
Can emotional release work be done remotely?
Yes. Most of my clients work with me remotely from other states and countries.
Is this a replacement for therapy or medical care?
No. This does not replace mental health treatment or your physician. If you are working with a therapist or a doctor, keep working with them.
A note on what this is
What I am looking at is a different question from the one your doctor is answering: how emotions affect the way the body functions. If you have a diagnosis, keep working with the doctor who gave it to you.
Epigenetics is the study of how environment and experience change the way genes are expressed, without changing the genes themselves. Stress is part of that environment. Bruce Lipton's Biology of Belief brought this idea to a wider audience, and many of my clients have read it, or something like it, and arrived wondering what to actually do with it.
This is the doing part. Not a theory about the mind and the body, but a way to test what your body is prioritizing and work with it in the order it asks for.
If you have been doing everything right and nothing is moving
Biofeedback testing shows what your body is prioritizing, physical and emotional, so you are not guessing at what to address first.
