What Is PEMF Therapy?

PEMF, or pulsed electromagnetic field, uses a gentle pulsing magnetic field that passes through your body to support your cells' own natural function. The simplest way to describe it is the way Pulse Centers, the system I use, does: it's exercise for your cells. I offer it in my office, to my existing clients, as one supportive part of the work we're already doing together. This page explains how the technology actually works, what a session is like, and an honest look at what the evidence does and does not show.

I'm Kyla Phillips, a registered nurse with over 20 years of experience. I've used PEMF with clients for years, alongside biofeedback and the rest of my practice. There's a lot of noise around PEMF online, and a lot of overstatement, so I want to explain it plainly and stay careful about what can and can't be claimed.

How the technology works

Everything your body does runs on electricity. Every cell carries a small electrical charge across its membrane, a kind of built-in battery that lets it take in nutrients, clear out waste, and do its job. When you're healthy and well rested, that charge stays strong. Stress, poor sleep, hard physical days, and age all draw it down, and a cell with a low charge simply doesn't function as well.

PEMF works with that electrical reality. The device sends a gentle, pulsing magnetic field through your body. Because your cells are electrical, that pulsing field prompts a small electrical response inside them. Think of it as exercise for your cells: the pulse gives them a stimulus to respond to, the way lifting a weight gives a muscle something to work against, and that stimulus supports each cell's own ability to recharge and carry out its normal function. Part of that normal function happens at the cell membrane, and as the cell is gently pulsed, the membrane is supported in doing its everyday job of letting nutrients in and moving waste out.

Here's the part Pulse Centers is careful about, and so am I: PEMF doesn't do the work for your body. It supports your body's own self-regulating function. Nothing is forced. Your cells do the responding.

The way I usually put it to clients is simpler than all of that. It's like recharging your battery. Imagine your body as a battery that daily life slowly drains, cell by cell. By the end of a long stretch you feel it, physically and mentally. PEMF is a way to help put some of that charge back so your body can do what it already knows how to do.

One thing I tell people up front: an older phone with an older battery takes longer to charge, and it's similar here. The older you are, or the longer you've been feeling run down, the more time it may take before you notice a difference. That's normal, and it's worth knowing going in.

What a session is actually like

PEMF is something I offer in my office. You get comfortable, and the Pulse system runs a pulsing magnetic field through the area we're focusing on, at an intensity we set together. Most people feel a light tapping or pulsing sensation, sometimes a gentle muscle twitch, as the field cycles. It isn't painful, and we can always dial it to whatever feels comfortable for you. Most people find the session relaxing, and many find it calming.

Where you feel it can vary, and that's completely normal. Some people feel it evenly, others feel it more on one side, or more in an area that's been bothering them. The way I picture it is like filling potholes on a road: the pulse tends to go to the deepest, most worn spots first and work on those before it levels out everywhere else. So feeling it more in one place usually just means that's where your body is drawing on it most.

Two things help you get the most out of a session: come well hydrated and have your minerals in, because your body uses both to carry the charge. Drink plenty of water afterward too. Once in a while, usually someone who came in dehydrated or low on minerals, a person feels a little sore later. It's uncommon, and when it happens a gentle follow-up session focused on lymphatic support settles it.

Who should not use PEMF

Unlike some of what I do, PEMF has a few clear situations where it isn't appropriate, and I check before your first session. It isn't for you if you have an implanted electronic device such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, cochlear implant, or spinal stimulator; if you're pregnant; or if you're actively bleeding. You'll also be asked to remove metal items before a session. If anything is unclear, we go over it together first.

What the evidence shows, honestly

I want to keep two things in separate buckets here, because blurring them is where PEMF gets oversold.

What's established: PEMF has a long research history that goes back decades, with a lot of the early work done in Europe and the former Eastern Bloc. In the United States, the FDA has cleared certain PEMF devices for specific medical uses, most notably to support bone healing in fractures that won't knit on their own, and to reduce swelling and discomfort after surgery. Those are dedicated medical devices, prescribed for those purposes.

An important distinction: the Pulse Centers system I use is a general wellness device, not one of those FDA-cleared medical devices. I don't use it to treat medical conditions, and Pulse Centers is clear about this too. In their words, PEMF doesn't treat a specific condition; it supports the body's own self-regulating function.

What I can share is how it's used in a wellness setting: for general relaxation, to help relax muscles, to support the body's recovery process, to support healthy circulation, and to help soothe the minor aches and the muscle soreness that come after activity or a demanding week. I offer it as one supportive part of a larger plan, never as a stand-alone answer to anything, and always alongside your medical care rather than in place of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is PEMF?

PEMF stands for pulsed electromagnetic field. It's a gentle pulsing magnetic field, passed through the body by a device, that prompts a small electrical response in your cells and supports their own natural function. Pulse Centers, the system I use, describes it as exercise for your cells. In my practice it's one supportive part of a larger wellness plan, offered in my office.

How does PEMF work?

Your cells are electrical, each one carrying a small charge that it needs in order to function. PEMF sends a pulsing magnetic field through the body, and because your cells respond to that field, it acts like a stimulus, a form of exercise for the cell, that supports its own ability to recharge and do its job. It supports your body's natural function rather than doing the work for it.

What does a PEMF session feel like?

Comfortable and usually relaxing. You rest while the Pulse system runs the field through the area we're focusing on, at an intensity we set together. Most people feel a light tapping or pulsing sensation, sometimes a gentle muscle twitch. Where you feel it can vary, sometimes more on one side or in an area that's been bothering you, and that's normal. It isn't painful, and we adjust it to what feels right. Come well hydrated with your minerals in, and drink plenty of water afterward.

Is PEMF FDA approved?

Certain PEMF devices are FDA cleared for specific medical uses, such as supporting bone healing in difficult fractures and reducing swelling and discomfort after surgery. Those are dedicated medical devices. The Pulse Centers system I use is a general wellness device, not an FDA-cleared medical device, and I use it to support the body's own function, not to treat conditions.

Does PEMF treat specific conditions?

No. I don't use PEMF to diagnose, treat, or cure any condition, and I don't make claims about specific illnesses. As Pulse Centers puts it, PEMF doesn't treat a condition; it supports the body's own self-regulating function. It works alongside your medical care, not in place of it.

Who should not use PEMF?

PEMF isn't appropriate for anyone with an implanted electronic device such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, cochlear implant, or spinal stimulator, for anyone who is pregnant, or for anyone who is actively bleeding. I check on all of this before your first session.

Is PEMF available remotely?

No. PEMF runs on equipment in my office, so it's offered in person, and only to my existing clients, on the days I'm in.

How to start

PEMF is something I offer to my existing clients, in my office. It isn't a stand-alone service for new folks; it's an add-on to the work we're already doing together. If we work together and you'd like to add it, book a session below or mention it at your next visit. If you're not a client yet and PEMF is what brought you here, the best place to start is remote biofeedback testing as a new client. Once we're working together, you're welcome to come into the office and add PEMF in person.
